RISING 4Q21 KFI SCORES INDICATE IMPROVING CREDIT UNION FUNDAMENTALS HEADING INTO 2022
KFI Scores for credit unions have continued to trend higher since reaching cyclical lows in mid-2020 during the depths of the pandemic (see Figure 1). The steady improvement indicates moderating risks across the balance sheet, especially credit and liquidity risks, combined with normalization of core earnings (see Figure 2). While earnings performance metrics were significantly impacted by higher provisioning in 2020, subsequent reserve releases throughout 2021 helped boost returns. The median 4Q21 KFI Score for credit unions is in the B+ to A- range, compared to about B- in the same quarter last year.
